Position Details
Translators
Chinese Translators: Chinese translations are usually checked using the Japanese version of the manga or using the Japanese Drama CD, so be prepared to see corrections in your translations. You will not be expected to translate any names or Japanese sound effects. Those applying for Chinese Translator should be prepared to take a test that checks mostly for overall accuracy.
Japanese Translators: Projects with and without Furigana are available, so pick something that is within your ability. You will not be expected to translate any sound effects. A wide variety of projects will generally be offered that you may choose from.
Scanners
We are looking for scanners who can provide us with high quality scans. Scanners will almost always be freelancers - we only accept scans of projects that we are currently requesting. Chinese scans do not have to be high quality.
Editors
Editors are be split into two groups: cleaners and typesetters. You can join us as either of the two groups or both.
We suggest that you take some time to look through the following websites:
Storm in Heaven (SiH) Tutorial |
Forever-More (F-M) Tutorial
Cleaners: Your tasks include rotating, resizing, cropping, leveling, removing gutter shadows, fixing bent lines, etc. Cleaning does NOT involve removing text - you will only need to be familiar with the Scanning section of the F-M Guide, and the Cleaning section of the SiH guide.
Typesetters: Your tasks include removing text from cleaned scans, and replacing them with text given to you by the proofreader. Most sound effects will need to be edited (some footnoting is allowed), so keep in mind that you will be doing a good amount of redrawing and cloning. You will need to be familiar with the Cleaning, Editing, and Text Effects sections of the F-M Guide, as well as the Typesetting and SFXs sections of the SiH Guide.
Proofreaders
Proofreaders should be able to read a good amount of Japanese. You will have to compare translations from the Chinese raws with the Japanese raws to make sure that names and other translatons match up. You should be familiar with the English language, and be able to correct punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, tenses, logic, and other grammatical errors.
QCers
QCers are split into two groups: General QCers and Quick QCers. General QCers need to be familiar with both cleaning and typesetting, while Quick QCers only need to be fluent in English.
General QC: Those applying for this position will need general Photoshop experience. Your main job will be to look over edited scans and fix badly placed text and/or cloning mistakes, erase dust and/or gutter shadow, and change other things that the editor or cleaner may have overlooked.
Quick QC: The main requirement of this position is fluency and a good grasp of the English language. However, this is also the only position with a strict deadline of one day. Your main task will be to read releases and check for typos, missing translations, missing pages, and grammatical errors that may have been overlooked in any of the initial stages. You must be willing to read manga of ALL genres, and check your e-mail AT LEAST once a day.
